Safety Rating Scale

  1. Completely Unsafe: Residents feel consistently at risk, possibly due to frequent nearby criminal activity. They may avoid staying home alone, especially at night, and feel vulnerable even indoors. No security measures are in place or are considered ineffective.
  2. Very Unsafe: Residents are aware of recent break-ins or threats in their immediate area. Fear is persistent, and there’s little confidence in local law enforcement or emergency response times. Home may lack basic security features.
  3. Unsafe: There’s a strong perception that crime is likely to affect them. They may have basic security (e.g., locks) but don’t believe it’s enough. Anxiety about theft or intrusion is common, and personal routines may be altered to avoid risk.
  4. Somewhat Unsafe: Residents experience concern, particularly at night or when home alone. Some security steps are taken (e.g., locking doors, using lights), but they don’t feel fully protected. They may have heard of local crime but not been personally affected.
  5. Neutral: People feel neither safe nor unsafe. They recognise risks but aren’t fearful. Safety may depend on context (e.g., time of day, whether others are home). Basic security habits are used, but not extensively.
  6. Somewhat Safe: There is general comfort, but occasional concern, often based on news or neighbourhood gossip. Security measures are present (e.g., deadbolts, sensor lights). People may feel fine during the day but slightly uneasy at night.
  7. Safe: Residents feel reasonably confident in their home’s security and the neighbourhood’s safety. They have active measures (e.g., alarm systems or cameras) and feel reassured by them. Crime seems rare or distant.
  8. Very Safe: Strong sense of personal and community security. Neighbours watch out for each other, and crime feels unlikely. Security systems are well-maintained, and residents rarely feel at risk, even at night.
  9. Extremely Safe: People feel protected both by their environment and their own precautions. There is strong trust in both home security systems and community safety. Emergency services are seen as responsive and reliable.
  10. Totally Safe: Complete peace of mind. Residents have no concern about crime and take minimal extra precautions because they feel it’s unnecessary. The area is perceived as highly secure, with strong social cohesion and near-zero reported incidents.
